Latitude N 34 53.930 x Longitude W 82 59.068 CHURCH/CEMETERY HISTORY: ------------------------ In the 1920s, Leonard Nations from Pickens county set up a tent near Salem at the Junction of Shallowford and Nimmons Bridge Roads. He was a lay preacher and knew the Bible well. Several people became members of the Seventh-Day Adventist faith and a company was formed. Needing a place to worship, and it being hard times then, an open-air building was erected. This was used as a meeting place ten to twelve years until it deteriorated and was not usable. For eighteen years, there was no church building. In the early 1950s, Earl Jeys, a Seventh-Day Adventist from Tennessee retired to the Salem area. He found some members living in Oconee County and began planning for a church. Many helped with materials, money, and labor. A simple frame building took shape. In 1956, it was dedicated with a charter membership of eighteen. During the years that followed, additions were made, including a fellowship hall. In the 1980s, this building became too small for the congregation and plans were made to build a larger church. The sanctuary was moved to one side and still used while the new church was being built. When the new church was completed, the old building became a church school. The new church was dedicated in 1986. The membership in 1995 is 102. After sharing a pastor with the Greenville Seventh-Day Adventist Church for many years, the Salem church got its own pastor in 1977. The present pastor is Glen Garver. The Salem Seventh-Day Adventist Church is located on Highway 130 north of Salem, half a mile from Highway 11. Submitted by: Nell Redman, 586 Meadow Ridge Drive, Salem, SC 29676.
